Welcome!
Dear Friends,
Later this week I will be issuing a press release announcing my intention not to seek reelection in November and retire from Congress at the end of this year.
As you know, last year I announced my plan to seek reelection, so I wanted to provide you a more detailed explanation as to why I have changed my plans. You have been a great supporter and I thought I owed you more than what you would just read in the newspaper.
When I first ran in 1994 I made it quite clear that I was happy at that time practicing medicine and I was not looking for a career change. Rather, I wanted to make changes in Washington. In my first 3 terms we accomplished many of the things I ran on in ’94 like balancing the budget, reforming welfare, and cutting taxes to get the economy going.
In 2001 my plan was to not seek reelection and return to medicine at the conclusion of my 4th term. At the time many of you asked me to seek reelection and stay in office a little longer, and after the events of 9/11 I am glad I stayed and continued to serve.
However, it has never been my intention to serve indefinitely. I always assumed that at some point I would leave and would be able to go back to my practice and have more time with my family.
In recent months, however, it has been increasingly important to me to ask myself the question: will I ever go back to medicine and how long was I planning to ask my wife and children to continue to make the sacrifices necessary to allow me to serve?
This has been a tough decision for me. I have very much enjoyed my service, but I need to do what is best for my family now and be true to my heart’s desire. I am confident that the Republicans will have a strong nominee and we will be able to retain this seat in the House of Representatives
I plan to spend the remainder of this year working hard for you in Washington and doing what I can to help elect a person who will continue to fight for the values we share. Thank you again for your support, and certainly let me know if you might need a new (or should I say a slightly recycled) doctor next year.
Lastly, I will be announcing soon the details of my plan to return a portion of the contributions I received this past year.
Thank you again for all your support over the years, some of you since I began this quest back in 1994. You will always be remembered by me.
Dave
